As more and more companies come up every day, the need for the corporate lawyers increases. This makes law an evergreen option for the youngsters to opt for. Like every other work field, one needs to qualify for this too. One has to undergo 4 years in college followed by a specialization in the corporate law subject. Aftermath of this includes sitting for a test (BAR) to legally qualify as a lawyer. This examination is more to test the aptitude and the attitude than the knowledge as this is one field which involves constant learning and endurance. Once this test is cleared, you are legally qualified to practice law in the state for which the exam was given (all states have separate bar examinations).
Once you get recruited, the earliest post is of a Junior Corporate Associate. As it is a low profile job, you are supposed to be doing all the paper work. This involves proofreading, organizing documents and all the clerical jobs which cannot be done by literal clerks. Additional jobs that might be given to you are memorandum writing, review conduction etc. Long story short, everything that has not been taught in the law school is undertaken here which also acts as a basic training experience. A major amount of time will go in researching for the senior lawyers who do what is called the "real work".
After putting in some time in this area, one has the opportunity to go up the ladder to eventually have a couple of junior corporate associates working under you, thus Becoming a REAL Lawyer. You might have projects of your own which will be handled solely by you. The amount of hours that need to be put in exceed 50 hrs a week, this is much more than what a regular employee somewhere else would do. The only motivational factor is that the pay is extremely good. The only condition to achieve all this is through hard work and having the skills to crack problems.
If you have the right knack and the right attitude, there is a lot to achieve. A couple of good cases in your pocket can increase your reputation in the corporate world. To be honest, the success of a lawyer depends on his/her reputation to a certain extent. The higher is the reputation; more are the chances of getting lucrative deals. One can even switch jobs between various firms as the name would speak for itself.
The pay in this field is enough to help you open your own firm. The start would be small as in the case with all companies, but eventually you would be able to hire people to work for you and be the one to be recruiting people just as you were. Achieving this objective is a long shot process and it would take its due course for you to achieve. The skills that you were tested on during the beginning of your career would be tested i.e. attitude and aptitude. Patience would be important along with being dedicated to your work.
